In 2022, Dr. Evelyn Chiang (Psychology) and Dr. Lei Han (New Media) were awarded funding for a SHIFT project by the Office of the Deans at UNC Asheville. Peter Lewis (IREP) and Kenneth Michaud (Production & Lab Manager, New Media) also joined the team.
Our SHIFT project focuses on the experiences of Asians, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, emphasizing the vast diversity among those who fall under the “AAPI” umbrella, addressing discrimination and harmful stereotypes such as the model minority myth, and advocating for greater visibility, voice, and inclusion.
Our funding will span three semesters (Spring 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024), but our efforts will not end with this project. Our goals are to raise awareness, provide education, advocate for inclusion, and ultimately create momentum for change.
